Background

The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and the environment. Since 1970, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people. View the Agency’s complete strategic plan, annual report, and policy resources.

EPA employs 18,000 people across the country, including our headquarters offices in Washington, DC, 10 regional offices, and more than a dozen labs. Their staff is highly educated and technically trained; more than half are engineers, scientists, and policy analysts. In addition, a large number of employees are legal, public affairs, financial, information management, and computer specialists. EPA is led by the Administrator, who is appointed by the President of the United States. This requirement is anticipated to receive Economic Stimulus funds.

Requirements

Specific tasks required include:

  • Containment of the pollutant and countermeasure actions
  • Clean-up, mitigation, and disposal of pollutants
  • Restoration of the clean-up site
  • Analytical activities
  • Development and implementation of a quality assurance plan
  • Technical support for government enforcement proceedings
  • Maintain Level A emergency response capabilities that meet the requirements of this section
  • Level A emergency responses may involve industrial chemicals and/or incidents involving materials associated with terrorist activities, including the following:
    • Biological warfare agents
    • Radiological materials
    • Chemical warfare agents (i.e. nerve agents, blister agents, blood agents, choking agents, etc.)
    • Other industrial chemicals that might be used as weapons
