Background

1st Air Force, Detachment 3 (1AF, Det 3) serves as a liaison between United States Space Command (USSC), 1 AF and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Artemis Program, Commercial Crew Program (CCP) and Soyuz Program. The USSC Commander is the Department of Defense (DoD) Manager for Human Space Flight Support (HSFS) and 1AF is the designated Air Component for the USSC HSFS mission. 1AF, Det 3 accomplishes the following tasks in support of the overarching HSFS mission: plan, coordinate; develop tactics, techniques and procedures; test and evaluate; train forces; document and implement lessons learned; logistics; command, control and communication; and financial management.

1AF, Det 3 Mission Statement: “Enable current and future national space objectives by planning, coordinating, training and executing DoD nominal and contingency support for human space flight.”

1AF, Det 3 Vision Statement: “An elite team – integrate DoD rescue, recovery and retrieval for human space flight.”

Requirements

Work alongside 1 AF, Det 3 personnel to provide technical assistance, analysis, recommendations, observations, and products in direct support to unit mission priorities and objectives, thus enabling 1 AF, Det 3 to fulfill its USSC-assigned responsibilities. The responsibilities are as, but not limited to, as follows:

  • Be directly accountable for the Government mission accomplishment.
  • Obligate the Government by contract, policy, regulation, or order.
  • Acquire or dispose of Government property.
  • Control Government operations.
  • Develop policy or manage programs.
  • Establish official objectives, set priorities, judge risk, or decide courses of action.
  • Allocate Government resources, determine required supplies and services.
  • Represent Government interests at official functions and negotiations.
  • Provide advisory assistance on defense- related matters on behalf of the DoD to other federal agencies.
